The major purpose of the course is to help students gain and display an understanding of American government, and the processes of government that help shape our public policies. This course will help students begin to learn methods for studying political behavior and political institutions. Students can begin to develop a more sophisticated and insightful understanding of majority rule democracy, constitutionalism, civil liberties, and other distinguishing characteristics of the American governmental system.

US History

United States History is an overview of major events that have helped to shape our nation. The assignments presented begin with the development of our first colonies and continue through to the events of present day America.

World History

This course will be a survey of the history of human civilization from the earliest civilizations through the industrial age.

Street Law

Street Law is an introductory course to the study of law.  It is basically a law class for people who are not going to be lawyers.  It focuses on the laws that we, as average citizens, need to know in order to function in our society.  The concepts covered include: 1)How and why laws are made; 2) Criminal law and the justice system; 3) Civil law and torts; 4) Contracts and credit; 5) Consumer law; 6) Family law; 7) Laws in the workplace; and 8) Constitutional law.

World Geography is a study of the earth and everything in it.  After briefly touching on the make-up of the Earth itself, her weather systems, and plant and animal life, the student will take a “journey” around the world studying different countries.  These “journeys” will include studying the environment, history and cultures of a people.  Current events from around the globe will also be included in this course, as well as a Geojournal.  At the end of this course, the student will have a better understanding of the world we live in and the people in it.

Psychology(one semester only)

This course will study the application of basic psychological concepts.  It will include the study of psychological research, biological foundations of psychology, as well as the role of the human psyche in the learning process and psychological applications in the healthcare field.   The following topical units will be studied:

Unit 1: Introduction and Research Methods - Neuroscience and Biological Foundation

Unit 2: Stress and Health Psychology - Sensation and Perception

Unit 3: States of Consciousness - Learning

Sociology(one semester only)

This course will study the factors in the social life of people.  It will include the study of group behavior, culture, socialization, social groups.  The nature of specific organizations of groups;  their activities and the social influences that affect personalities, behavior and social change.
