Kindergarten  

Kindergarten children will be introduced to letters, sounds, numbers, patterns, etc. It is designed to be a relaxed, but structured environment to allow each child to begin learning the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic at their own pace.  some children will be reading by semester, others by the end of the year.  With time and patience, ALL children will be successful in laying the proper foundation to make them successful learners throughout their lives.  All lessons are correlated to Kansas State Assessment Standards.

 

1st Grade

First Graders will learn basic reading, comprehension, writing, spelling, grammar, and math skills.  All lessons are correlated to Kansas State Assessment Standards.  In math they will count and work with numbers to 100 and learn addition and subtraction facts.  They will begin learning problem-solving strategies and be given opportunities to apply them.  Reading, phonics, and math are strongly stressed.  They will be introduced to basic science and social studies concepts, which are usually integrated with their reading story for the week.

 

2nd Grade

Second Graders will continue developing their reading, comprehension, writing, spelling, grammar, and math skills.  All lessons are correlated to Kansas State Assessment Standards.  Math will include counting and work with numbers to 100+.  Carrying and borrowing in addition and subtraction, as well as some basic multiplication facts will be learned.  Problem-solving strategies will be developed with opportunities to apply them.  Reading, phonics, and math are strongly stressed.  They will receive more formal science and social studies instruction.  Some lessons will be integrated with their reading story for the week, and others will be separate units.

 

3rd Grade

Third grade students will be studying the following subject areas:  Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts.  All lessons are correlated to Kansas State Assessment Standards.

* Math will be using the Saxon Grade 3 Kit.  The lessons in this kit are designed to be sequential and “spiraling” which means that every day we go back and review everything that has been previously taught.  

* Science will be studying areas such as physical science, matter and is properties, and the Earth and its resources.  

* Social Studies will be focusing on communities around our nation and the role that the community plays in our lives.  

* Language arts will include grammar, spelling, phonics, writing, and reading.  There will be one story per week with most assignments in reading, grammar, and spelling tied to that story. 

 

4th Grade

Fourth grade students will be studying the following subject areas:  Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts. All lessons are correlated to Kansas State Assessment Standards.

* The lessons in the math course are designed to be sequential and “spiraling” which means every day we go back and cover everything that has been previously taught. 

* Science will be looking at the Earth, matter, living things, weather, and electricity and magnetism.  There will be plenty of opportunity for investigating.

* The United States and a study of the five major regions is our topic in social studies.  

* Our language arts program will include grammar, spelling, phonics, writing and reading.  The writing program is based on the 6-Trait Writing model and will use the writing process.

 

5th Grade

Fifth grade students will be studying the following subject areas: math, science, social studies, reading and language arts. All lessons are correlated to Kansas State Assessment Standards.

* The lessons in math are designed to be sequential and “spiraling,” which means every day we go back and cover concepts that have been previously taught.

* Your science course will cover systems of living things, the solar system and beyond, matter and energy, ecosystems, the solid Earth, and light and sound. You will be introduced to inquiry science with plenty of opportunity for investigating.

* The United States, its beginning, and the history of its expansion from before the colonies to becoming a world power are explored in social studies.

* And finally, our language arts program will include grammar, spelling, writing and reading. There will be one story a week with nearly all assignments in reading, grammar, and spelling tied to that story. The writing program is based on the 6-Trait Writing model and will use a multi-step writing process.

6th Grade

Sixth grade students will be studying the following subject areas: math, science, social studies, reading and language arts. All lessons are correlated to Kansas State Assessment Standards.

* The lessons in math are designed to be sequential and “spiraling,” which means every day we go back and cover concepts that have been previously taught.

* Science will cover cells and microbes, heredity, life science, the nature of matter, earth science, forces and motion, and oceanography. You will be introduced to inquiry science with plenty of opportunity for investigating.

* Social studies starts with ancient civilizations and moves through the exploration of the New World. We also look at economic, civic and social issues during this time period.

* And finally, our language arts program will include grammar, spelling, writing and reading. There will be one story a week with nearly all assignments in reading, grammar, and spelling tied to that story. The writing program is based on the 6-Trait Writing model and will use a multi-step writing process.

 

Electives:

Skills Tutor

SkillsTutor is a proven, research-based instructional program designed to improve student achievement for students in grade 3 through adult.  Lessons are interactive and require students to be online while working.

More than 1,000 activities and lessons focus on the core skills commonly found on standardized tests. Topics include reading, writing, language, mathematics, information skills, algebra, science, and workforce preparation.  Lessons are aligned with Kansas state and national academic standards.

Quizzes and Tests quickly identify student's weak skill areas and prescribe appropriate lessons to achieve skill mastery. Pre-tests and post-test reinforce learning, track progress, and help students feel comfortable taking standardized tests in a similar format. The Management System monitors student progress and generates accountability reports.

 

Art

This course is designed to develop art skills, art vocabulary, art appreciation and art history.  The lessons encourage exploration, creativity, and problem solving.  Learning the language of art gives children the ability to communicate and express themselves and their world.  This will be done through hands-on art projects.

 

Physical Education

This course is designed specifically for students to become lifelong participants of physical activity. Students will develop basic skills and acquire basic knowledge in various physical activities through creating goals and maintaining exercise schedules to meet the goals set. Each student will be required to record all physical activity completed to accumulate a total of 90 hours for the year.  In addition, students will participate in units on health and nutrition designed to prepare them to live healthy lives.
