Survival of the Fittest

The fifth grade class has been hard at work learning to survive! We started 2008 on the Island of the Blue Dolphins with Karana and her dog friend, Rontu-Aru. We learned to fish, build fires, tame wild dogs, and create shelter. While we were on the Island, we also discovered new animals we had never seen before. Some of the favorites were cormorants, sea otters, devilfish, and red-winged blackbirds. It was like a zoo in our backyard!!
During our down time, everyone learned how to make objects out of natural materials. Maria (above) decided to use her skill to make beautiful necklaces and bracelets. Some of the other students made spears, bows and arrows, and a skirt of cormorant feathers.
Our next survival test will be Julie of the Wolves. Let's hope we can make it through the Arctic freeze!!
