Shane Griffin's Book Report Sandwich about the life story of Willie Mays.

Ham and Swiss on Wheat and this is Language Arts?

by Kathy Wiegers

February 13, 2008

Ham and swiss on wheat with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise may sound like a deli order, but recently, in Elkhart Cyber School, it was a seventh grade book report.  Each student read his or her choice of a biography or an autobiography and then created their book report on paper sandwich parts.  Here you can see one of the delicious results.  Shane Griffin read, Say Hey by Lou Sahadi, the life story of Willie Mays.   On the top slice of bread, they wrote the title and author of the book.

The highpoint or climax of the book is written on the swiss cheese of the sandwich.

The swiss cheese was the place for the most exciting moment in the book.  On the lettuce, the student described the book's setting.  The ham gave the student a good spot for telling about the plot.  On the tomato slice, they told about the main character.

On the bottom piece of bread, Shane drew his favorite part of the story.

The bottom slice of bread gave the student a chance to be an artist and share their favorite scene from the book. This project made fun out of what can be a boring book report.  Good job seventh graders!  Keep that appetite for reading!
